  2. vast "Hellas Planitia", or
  3. "Plain of Hell. Hellas is a
  4. nearly circular area about 1200
  5. miles across. This is the largest
  6. impact basin on Mars. These
  7. basins are the result of massive
  8. strikes by ancient asteroids
  9. which gouge out billions of
  10. tons of material. The heat
  11. generated by the blast
  12. will melt much of what's left
  13. filling up the basin with
  14. a lake of lava. When it cools,
  15. we have a flat plain.
